We Read! #weread1415

As many of you know, the 2014-2015 school year is headed this way…quickly! I don’t know about what you have done this summer, but I have been setting up our classroom, cleaning house, enjoying the outdoors and reading! If you know me, you know that I absolutely love books. I might be somewhat of a bibliomaniac, or at least that is what former students have told me. Even though I love to read, I realize that not everyone shares my passion. This year, it is my goal to encourage you to get your hands on books! Yes, I want you to actually open a few and read them, but how are you supposed to find the right one if you haven’t sifted through several? In order to encourage more book browsing, and more reading, I have created a classroom Instagram challenge.

For each month that we are in school, I will post 2-3 Instagram challenges. All will involve books. All you have to do is upload the picture and use the classroom hashtag #mrsriversroom and the hashtag #weread1415. These challenges will all be simple, and they will all earn rewards (raise-a-grade passes, homework passes, etc.). I will be monitoring these pictures, and if anyone posts something I deem inappropriate, the photo will be reported. So if you are in doubt, don’t do it!

If you are visiting our website via Pinterest, a blog, or just an Internet search, please please please participate! If you have a classroom Instagram, connect your students photos to your classroom hashtag and add #weread1415! Wouldn’t it be great to see how many students across the country, and the world, are reading?!? I plan on posting a teacher challenge for the month of July, just to see what kind of interest there is. I also want to add that there is no winner, per se. The reward is getting kids to read, touch, browse, and love books!

Education is th…

Welcome to our 5th grade classroom! This blog will be used for a variety of purposes. My first mission is to keep parents updated and informed about classroom events, assignments, etc. My second mission is to provide a way for others to see what and how we are learning. My third mission is to allow students to take an active role in their education. Often times, technology is handed to students without teaching them technique and etiquette. Should I put this on the Facebook? How do I maneuver a keyboard and mouse efficiently? What do I click to make this capitalized? Where is the address bar? Believe it or not, I have been asked all of those questions by students. Part of  what I want to accomplish this year (and for many years to come) is to let students see how technology should be used, and how technology gives us endless possibilities for learning.

Please visit soon to see how I am getting the classroom ready for my new students!
